What is Their Aim?
Slave Free Chocolate
have stated: "Our mission is not to boycott cocoa or chocolate but to put
pressure on the powers involved to implement what is already in place." In
this they are referring to the Harkin/Engel Protocol as the thing that is already
in place. The Powers involved include all companies and businesses that signed
the Protocol. The Slave Free website shows many different stories involved with child labour in the chocolate industry and updates on different company’s involvement as well as businesses that are having an effect on child
labour in the chocolate industry.
WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO MEET THE GOALS OF THE HARKIN/ENGEL PROTOCOL?
Slave Free chocolate is offering a way to contact the companies and businesses that signed the Harkin/Engel Protocol. They provide everything you can say and you can just fill it in and send it to the chocolate company of your choice.
They have communicated to some of the major chocolate companies (including Mars and Hersheys) about their act (or non-act) upon the Harkin/Engel Protocol. These companies have responded with less-than-convincing arguments and ‘facts’ based on this topic. Nether-the-less they did get a response which includes what they are doing to participate in the Protocol.
They are also making people more aware of the things that are going on in the chocolate industry so that they can have a say in what is being done for the Harkin/Engel Protocol.
THE IMPACT OR RESULTS THEY HAVE HAD SO FAR
I am not quite sure but I do know that they have caused these companies to revise on their commitments to the Protocol, which we see in their extensive responses. They have also impacted on the companies by allowing any person to communicate with them so that they can see that people really do care about the harm that they are causing.
